Sixteen Blocks (work song for the modern day)
To the tune of "Sixteen Tons"
(1) I was born on a day when the net didn't run
I grabbed my mouse and gave it the gun.
I wrote sixteen blocks of Grade-A code
and the straw-boss said "well bless mah soul".
Chorus:
Sixteen blocks, and what do I get ?
another day older and deeper in debt.
NSF don't you call me, 'cause I can't go:
I sold mah soul to the PSC.
(2) If (you see me coming) then {step aside};
A lot of bugs didn't; a lot of bugs died.
The left's a ctrl-C, the right's a ctrl-Y,
if (the one don't get you) then {the other will}.
Repeat Chorus
(3) I don't need callouses, I don't need sweat
I never feel the pain of an oxygen debt.
But the modern world's an acronymic hell
'cause I'm F.U.B.A.R. and S.O.L..
Repeat Chorus
(4) Don't think this is easy, don't say I can't shout
the ways things are going I'll never logout!
My fingers are committed a lifetime ahead,
I'll be debugging code the day after I'm dead!
Repeat Chorus
(5) They say my day is over; they say my time has come.
They say for programmers the course is almost run.
"Automatic generation is what the future's all about",
But they always forget: "Garbage in- Garbage out !"
Repeat Chorus
(6) I play the game that no-one ever wins
what at first seem virtues, turn out sins
If the code is bad, everyone knows my name
If the code is good, then it's public domain!.
Repeat Chorus
