Biography

James Short is Lead Scientist and Director of the SPARK AI Industry Consortium at the University of California San Diego. His research focuses on artificial intelligence, specifically the strategic and technical assessment of AI, AI governance and regulation. Current projects include a project tracking AI progress in selected industry domains, a second project called Living with AI that examines civic, social and workforce impacts, and a third effort examining AI investments and costs. His published work covers the adoption and economics of large-scale data systems, the valuation of data and information markets, and the economic incentives and management of data privacy and data sharing. Before joining UC San Diego and the San Diego Supercomputer Center, Short taught IT strategy and management information systems (MIS) at the London Business School (LBS) and the MIT Sloan School of Management. Short holds undergraduate, master's and PhD degrees from MIT. He is active in IT professional organizations and serves as an editorial board member and reviewer for several technology and business management journals.
